Band Biography :
The band began as a three man outfit of singer/guitarist Joe Spinelli, guitarist
Tom Spinelli, and bassist John Enright. Based in Rochester, New York the three
friends started writing songs and practicing in their free time. Acquiring a
drummer, Mike, DSpell began to play at local clubs and parties. In 2001, Mike
parted from DSpell and the hunt for a new drummer was on. After numerous and
often entertaining temporary replacements, the band finally found a match in
Kyle Dean. Dean brought a new edge to DSpell and helped tighten playing in
technical areas. The band developed their own unique sound and as a four piece
traveled around New York and the surrounding states with a couple of treks to
Canada. They also recorded three full length albums; This is the End, What Lies
Before You, and 24 Hours to Get This Right. The CDs produced nominal success,
mainly in the local circuits, and the band started getting play on local radio
stations. The four years of playing shows and traveling left the band with many
new friends and contacts as well as a stronger bond with each other. Yet the
four yearned for something different. Whereas the dedication and musicianship
was there as it had always been, now there was the feeling that something was
missing. In 2004 the band found what they were looking for in guitarist Rich
DiRenzo. Rich joined on guitar allowing Joe to concentrate solely on vocals and
focus on developing his skill as a singer. This addition solidified what is now
DSpell. The five members toured for most of the summer then decided to take some
time off. During their six-month hiatus, the band turned introspectively to
assess what exactly they wanted to get out of playing music. Numerous
beer-induced jam sessions later, DSpell emerged with a new, tighter, more
provocative sound and driven attitude. The band recorded a 4 song EP in a
whirlwind 2 days. The resulting disc has generated quite a buzz locally and the
band has been busy playing shows, recently returning from a four day tour
through Ohio. DSpell has grown immensely as a band over the past five years,
integrating new sounds whilst experimenting with rhythm and song structure.
Their live performance is most impressive; the effort and energy that each
member puts forth into every show has captivated audiences throughout the
Northeastern states and parts of Canada. When DSpell plays, people in the venue
stop and take notice. The music is alluring and the stage presence vivacious.
These five friends enjoy playing music and their enthusiasm echoes out through
each performance leaving lasting impressions.
