Band Biography :
Lush vocals, ripping guitar solos, raucous keyboard chops, voluptuous bass
lines, and pure, undeniable groove. This is the sound of Dystonic. The simple
fact is: this group makes great music. Descriptions fall short. The band has
recently released a seven song EP of original music. It announces their arrival
on the music scene boldly, and just in time. The sound is refreshing and varied,
and the young group proves that it can cover some ground. On the EP, the quartet
blends intriguing vocal harmonies and arrangements with remarkable instrumental
chops to create different moods. Each song’s conception is focused &
distinctive. Each one is melodic while the group never ignores the groove as an
essential element. The music combines the best of rock and jazz genres while the
influences go much further, from hip-hop to pop. The result is an ability to
explore unique ideas while maintaining melodic direction. Dystonic’s live show
is captivating. All the members are well schooled in their respective
instruments and you can tell. The band floats effortlessly among odd time
signatures and dissonant, abstract jams, from blissful sing-along choruses, to
heavy rock riffing and swinging hip-hop grooves. It is truly amazing. And yet it
is songwriting that set Dystonic apart from the fray. You will leave the show
with one of their songs stuck in your head. Dystonic’s members have studied
music throughout their lives. Most recently David at the Berklee College of
Music in Boston, Will and Adam in the ECU Jazz Studies Program, and Ray at the
NC School of the Arts. They have played together off and on since 1997 but did
not form as a group until 2004. With the release of their EP, Dystonic plan to
be playing around the southeast. They’ve already established a following in
their home base and beyond, so look and listen for Dystonic’s arrival in your
area soon. Their strong song writing, with a proclivity for the experimental,
makes this one of the acts to see in the near future. Subtly staggering.
