RAY GOMEZ BIOGRAPHY Ray Gomez was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1953.
Influenced from early childhood by American music; rhythm & blues and jazz, and
surrounded by North African rhythms, Ray began playing drums, followed by piano,
and finally guitar. At age ten, he gave his first concert before 5,000 people
and performed live on radio stations. In 1965 his family moved to Spain and at
age 15, he joined the number-one instrumental group there, and won the
reputation of a young prodigy. At age 18, Ray’s band, “The Pop Tops,” had an
international hit with three million copies sold worldwide, making it to
number-one in Europe, South America and Israel. After meeting George Harrison in
1973, Ray was invited to England where he frequented the hangouts of the leading
progressive musicians of the day. After a jam session with Carmine Appice, the
idea of a forming a group was discussed and Ray was invited to the USA. In 1975,
a meeting with Lenny White introduced Ray to the emerging jazz/rock fusion
scene, where he collaborated with Stanley Clarke, Deodato, Narada Michael
Walden, Herbie Hancock, and others. For his work on Stanley Clarke’s album,
“Schooldays,” the critics recognized Ray as one of the great contemporary
guitarists and he became known as a “guitarist’s guitarist.” In 1978, he
recorded his first solo album, “Volume,” which received accolades from critics
and media, and made it to number-one on the radio, notably, KSHE in St. Louis
and BBC-1 in London. Ray moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1984, where over
the next three years he worked with Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Steve Smith
(“Vital Information”), Steve Perry (“Journey”), Aretha Franklin, Tori Amos,
Narada, Brian Auger, etc. After a period of writing and pre-production of a new
album in Spain and the Canary Islands, Ray returned to New York and live
performance on the New York City club scene in 1988. Through 1995, Ray completed
several commercial projects, including an instructional video for “Starlicks”
with Tom Brechlein, wrote, produced, and performed on commercials for Coca Cola,
Brut de Fabergé, AT&T, Bell Atlantic, Palmolive, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Molson,
Coors, Budweiser, KFC, Pontiac, Gillette, etc. Through 1999, he participated in
several European concerts, including “Palabra de Guitarra Latina” in Palma de
Mallorca, “Festival de Guitar of Astaffort,” in France, and a tour with “Palabra
de Guitarra Latina” in Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands. Work on a new CD,
live performances at European and local clubs and festivals, (notably, “Jazz à
Vienne,” “La nuit de la guitare” in Agen, ”Festival de Guitare dans tous ses
Etats” in Nerac, “Cape May Jazz Festival” on the Jersey Shore, the Harresi
Aretoa Theater in Agurain, Spain), and teaching round-out Ray’s recent work and
current musical itinerary. His new CD project, “Honor,” is underway, and
scheduled to be released in the near future.
