Band Biography :
Saturn. The thought of sixth planet from the sun conjures up thoughts of bright
colors, cold atmospheric conditions and those mysterious rings that seem to defy
logic. SATURN. “THE COOLEST PLANET ON PLANET EARTH”. A Los Angeles based band
founded in 1996 by visionary, Memphis native, KASHAN RAMAHN ( formerly Ernest
Griffin, Crenshaw High Graduate) and radio announcer. Saturn incorporates funk,
R&B and soul with elements of smooth jazz and gospel. The band has been labeled
as one of the most innovative, up and coming bands to hit the music market.
Performing much of their original material to standing ovations. Saturn’s
talents have earned them much recognition by industry notables and fans for
their writing, arrangements and high-energy stage performances. Visually dynamic
on stage, the unique sound of Saturn is hard hitting, yet a smooth rhythmic ride
on an afro-funk wave. Blending ethereal, harmonic vocals with slick, but
polished grooves and layers and layers of tight, powerful rhythm. And all
surrounded by the swirling horn arrangements of the “Rings of Saturn” horn
section. Following the traditions of Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame legend, Earth,
Wind and Fire, Saturn appeals to mass cultures. They have shared the stage with
a wide range of diverse artists and bands, including jazz, folk, rock,
alternative, and Jam bands. “I really like the improvisational styles of the
jazz and jam bands,” says Ramahn. Crossing color lines, breaking down genre
barriers and winning new fans, young and old alike at every show. Something a
lot of R&B/soul acts seem to shy away from. They have been the only urban act at
a rock show. “We’re totally out- of- the- box”, Ramahn continues. Influences run
the full gamut of diversity including: Kool and the Gang; Maze, featuring
Frankie Beverly; Tower of Power; Sly & The Family Stone; Graham Central Station;
Miles Davis; Hiroshima and the afore mentioned elements of the universe, Earth,
Wind and Fire. “We feel the audience and that energy is transferable, taking us
to a higher place,” states Ramahn, who plays bass and handles the male Lead and
Background Vocal duties for the group. Joining Ramahn out front is DENISE
SHEVELLE (Lead & Background Vocals), JOHNNY McLEOD (Guitar & Background Vocals)
and NORM “THUNDERSTICKS” LANE (Drums). The in your face, “RINGS OF SATURN” horn
section features WYNELL MONTGOMERY (Saxophone), DATHAN DEDMAN (Trumpet &
Flugelhorn) and REMBERT JAMES (Trombone) adding fire and juiced-up punch to
Saturn’s planetary groove and jazz infused foundation; creating silky soul and
pure unadulterated funk. All of them have a jazz background and have performed
with some of the biggest names in the business. Keyboards ignite the bands’
fusion-filled arrangements. Painting colorful textures of funk, jazz fusion and
allows the band to stretch out and explore new improvised musical heights. On
special occasions, the group will utilize an extra guitarist, a second
keyboardist, a percussionist and three background singers to round out their
rich, soulful and unique sound. Saturn doesn’t miss a beat with Shevelle, the
newest member of the group, replacing Lisa Marie. She brings a fresh new look
and feel to the band, with her own sexy vocal stylings, as well as her writing
skills to the creative table. Their vocal collaborations are fun and believeable
with each song a musical adventure into the very core of their mystique. In
addition to the soulful music in concert, Saturn uses a bit of theatrics.
Special effects include fog, lasers, intricate lighting, computerized Saturn
symbols, spacemen and a replica of the planet whose name they bare: dynamically
stunning and truly something to behold. But it is the bass-driven music led by
the charismatic, Ramahn whose hyper-sensitive energy on stage takes him here,
there and everywhere. Drawing you into his magnetic field, mesmerizing you with
his smile and inter-action with the band members and the audience can’t seem to
keep their eyes off of him. Totally in sync with the thundering drums of Lane.
The future is bright and it’s harvest time for the up and coming, SATURN: “THE
COOLEST PLANET ON PLANET EARTH”.
