Band Biography :
Alan Daly - Guitars/Soundscaping Damien Forrester - Bass Gary Stanley - Guitars
James Owens - Drums A band whose music will readily lead intent listeners
through captivating, often unpredictable, and at times almost surreal, trance
inducing journeys with its merging passages and ever shifting atmospheres and
dynamics, and whose introspective, unerring, subdued melancholy, and
apocalyptic, mesmerising and at times euphoric power stem from an unlikely
combination of painstaking intricacy and remarkable simplicity, Six Reels of Joy
put everything they have into meticulously and intensively creating the finest
music they possibly can. It all began two autumns ago, when guitarists Alan and
Gary first decided to start writing music together following a trip to a local
gig. Though writing had to be fitted in around college and work schedules, the
pair had completed a couple of initial pieces of music by the end of the year.
Early in the New Year, Alan and Gary were joined by bassist Gavin, one of Gary’s
old school friends, and drummer James, a friend of Alan’s since the earliest
days of the guitarist’s developing interest in music when the two were in high
school together. With its line up now complete, the band immediately began
writing and rehearsing in preparation for an upcoming college production, which
formed part of the Music Technology National Diploma for which the four members
were studying. Further work, college and musical commitments meant that only a
handful of practices were interspersed between this initial performance and a
second, self organised gig at the college in June of 2003, on the eve of their
graduation from the college’s school of arts. After a hiatus of over a year
enforced by Alan, Gary and Gavin’s move to university to continue their music
studies, and the eventual departure of Gavin owing to the increasing demands of
his other musical commitments, Six Reels of Joy, once again in search of a bass
player to complete their line up, began writing and practising once more in the
summer of 2004. A new bassist was found in the shape of Damien Forrester, an old
friend and musical accomplice of Alan and James’ since high school, and their
days together as hapless punk trio Thatchers Children. After over 12 dormant
months, and with its newly re-completed line up, the band has a found a fresh
initiative, and new material is coming and freely and fast. Indeed, the band is
almost struggling to keep up with an ever-increasing wealth of initial material
and ideas, which it is developing from individual musical passages and themes
into fully structured pieces of music with consummate dedication and attention
to detail. The process of honing the arrangements and execution of each new
piece and making initial demo recordings continues, with live appearances and a
debut EP recording likely to come at some point in the not too distant future.
