Simply put, these guys are a good time waiting to happen. Out of what once was considered a mountain music revival, comes a chance for some to prove that mountain music was never dead. With their own brand of old time mountain music, charged with a youthful regeneration, The Hillbilly String Social prides itself on keeping alive a regional style of music that finds it’s survival in the interpretation and willingness to carry on by future generations.
THSS loves playing out, and aren’t afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve in a mash-up of a DIY independent ethos, channeled through Kentucky mountain music. Mountain roots music has never been as deeply rooted as it is in THSS.
You don’t have to be a bluegrass fan to enjoy the ringing banjo flailings of Yogi Tolliver, the staccato tremelo picking of JK Soard on mandolin, the chug-a-lugging, but fast paced acoustic guitar of Jordan Shokooh, and the low-down dirty bass stylings of Lil’ Ricky Winstead.
Covering a wide-range of songs, from covers to originals, the members of THSS show their appreciation of Americana roots music and have something for everyone. Imagine Bill Monroe, The Hackensaw Boys, Bootsy Collins, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers merging into a giant, Voltron-like mech warrior, who is high on corn liquor and you have a Hillbilly String Social show! Go see ‘em, or you’ll wish you had!
